Aquamarine, Birthstone for March
Aquamarine, March's Birthstone
Aquamarine, the gemstone of the sea – its name derives from the Latin ‘aquamarinus’ meaning ‘water of the sea’, due to its beautiful pale blue colour. It’s the blue variety of Beryl (the green version is emerald), and can vary in all different shades of blue. It truly is one the most alluring gemstones, and women have been clamouring to have it in their jewellery collection for centuries.
It’s believed to be the treasure of the mermaids (no wonder the love interest in Stingray was called Aqua Marina…) and is generally associated with all aspects of the sea. Sailors used to carry it as they believed it protected them against all the dangers of the sea, as well as alleviating against symptoms of seasickness. It’s generally a good stone for all travellers to have with them.
The properties of the sea are also reflected in the properties of aquamarine. Think about the waves lulling, the ebb and flow of the tide, and you won’t be surprised to learn that aquamarine calms, soothes, cleanses, and inspires trust, truth and letting go. Also as the tides are affected by the moon, so too is the gemstone, and its power increases with the rise of the moon.
It’s a stone which is often given as a token of love and affection as it is said to increase commitment and fidelity, so could even be the ‘blue’ as part of a ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ at a wedding, as it’s said to guarantee a long and happy marriage.
Aquamarine is associated with the throat chakra, so will relieve nerve pain, glandular problems, toothaches and disorders of the neck, jaw and throat. Not only that, for all my fellow entrepreneurs, this is a great one for you. Because of its association with the throat, it helps to overcome any fear of speaking, so make sure you have some with you if you have an important presentation to give.
It’s a stone of self-realisation, allowing us to see within ourselves, come to terms with our emotions, and opening communication (that throat chakra again!), so it’s a good one to have with you if you’re looking to heal, are grieving or coming to terms with a situation. It helps to manage change and uncertainty by bringing in those relaxing properties, helping you to deal with any negative feelings or emotional baggage. So a great one for spring cleaning your emotions.

And for anyone that may already have some aquamarine, try to keep it out of the sun when you’re not wearing it, as too much sunlight will cause the colour to pale, which would be such a shame, so look after it!
